Ainokura Gassho-style village in Gokayama is registered as a World Heritage Site. Ainokura village is one of the villages in the former Taira village (now Nanto city) of Gokayama, located upstream of the Shogawa River, and is located on a long, narrow plateau of gently sloping terraces on the mountainside.

Thatched roof houses known as "Gassho-zukuri" are a rare style of residential building found only in this neighborhood in Japan, and 20 Gassho-zukuri houses remain in Ainokura village. They were built between the Edo and Meiji periods, with the oldest believed to have been built in the 17th century. People still live in the village, and traditional ways of life are still alive and well. The sight of the houses embracing the changing seasons is beautiful at any time, but it is especially mystical when the entire village is covered in a silvery white winter snow.
